Tottenham Hotspur are awaiting further clarity on the extent of Lucas Bergvall’s (19) ankle injury amid growing concern that the midfielder could be sidelined for up to three months, BBC Sport reports.
The 19-year-old was forced off during Spurs’ 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday after attempting to play on in the second half. Initial assessments have raised fears of a prolonged absence, with three months considered the worst-case scenario while club medics continue their evaluations.
Bergvall’s potential lay-off would represent another significant setback for head coach Thomas Frank, whose debut season in north London has been undermined by persistent injury problems. Frank declined to offer a timeframe when asked ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Burnley, with Tottenham yet to confirm the severity of the issue.
Since arriving from Sweden in February 2024, Bergvall has quickly established himself as an important figure, making 26 appearances across competitions this season and earning six senior caps for his country.
Tottenham currently sit 14th in the Premier League following a disappointing first half of the season, and Bergvall’s absence would further stretch an already depleted squad. James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, and Ben Davies are all sidelined long-term, while Joao Palhinha is also unavailable.
With Richarlison not expected back for another six weeks, Frank faces another test of his resources as Spurs attempt to stabilise their season.
