Manchester City could yet lose one of their primary attacking talents during the next January transfer window, a new report has hinted.

City have just ended their busiest summer in the transfer market since 2017, with the club bringing in seven first-team signings and sanctioning the permanent and loan departures of several first-team stars who have played a key role in their success over the years.

Hugo Viana’s appointment as director of football has witnessed a changing of the guard at the Etihad Stadium, with long-serving players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Ederson and Ilkay Gundogan leaving permanently to mark a summer of revamp.

A fast start to the window saw deals close for all of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki in time for the quartet to fly to the United States and form part of Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup squad.

However, City’s lingering frailties in defence – that formed the crux of their issues last term – have not been addressed this summer, with Guardiola’s men suffering two defeats in their opening trio of 2025-26 Premier League games.

The additions of Gianluigi Donnarumma and James Trafford have overhauled the goalkeeping department, with Guardiola yet to decide on City’s first-choice goalkeeper and expected to hand the pair ample opportunities to make their case in the coming months – as former number one Ederson joined Fenerbahce for £12.1 million on deadline day.

City have also allowed Jack Grealish (Everton), Manuel Akanji (Inter Milan), Claudio Echeverri (Bayer Leverkusen), Vitor Reis (Girona) and summer signing Sverre Nypan (Middlesbrough) to leave on season-long loans for regular playing opportunities, with Guardiola insisting on his desire to work with a streamlined squad.

However, Manchester City managed to fend off interest in Savinho from Tottenham, who expressed strong interest in the 21-year-old Brazilian in the final weeks of the transfer window and are believed to have been put off by City’s valuation of their wide attacker.

According to a new report from The Telegraph’s Matt Law and Sam Wallace, a new bid from Tottenham to try to sign Savinho from Manchester City in the next January transfer window has ‘not been ruled out’.

Tottenham saw club legend and UEFA Europa League winning captain Son Heung-Min leave the club this summer, with James Maddison also suffering an ACL injury in August that will keep the England international on the sidelines until the spring of 2026 at the very least.

The north Londoners have announced this week that chairman Daniel Levy has departed the club, with a new hierarchal setup expected to bring changes to the European champions’ policy in the transfer market.

Having recovered from a minor fitness issue that has so far kept the winger out of action, Savinho is back in Manchester City training and could be back in the matchday squad when the Blues face local rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium after the international break.
