Tottenham Hotspur star Andy Robertson started for Scotland as Brazil beat them 3-0 to top Group C at the 2026 World Cup yesterday.

Spurs signed the Scotland captain on the cheap, hoping he would bring some winning experience to the roster.

However, Tottenham must have been seriously unimpressed with what they saw from Robertson as the Tartan Army succumbed to a defeat.

The 32-year-old was dribbled past once and failed to provide any attacking thrust from the left.

He was replaced by Kieran Tierney at half-time, who showed more attacking impetus than Robertson.

Manager Steve Clarke will be wishing he had started the game with Tierney. He provided exactly the kind of spark the team desperately needed.

“His half-time substitution was almost a blessing in disguise,” one publication wrote about Robertson’s performance.

Scotland face a nervy wait to see whether they will go through as one of the eight-best third-ranked teams, a quirk of the new, controversial 48-team format.

Tottenham may regret signing fading force

Robertson’s World Cup has not been the best audition for Tottenham. He has been noticeably poor versus Morocco and Brazil.

The decision to sign him was always questionable, despite his experience, pedigree and winning mentality.

He was already clearly on the decline at Liverpool, and it seems that decline is poised to continue at Tottenham.

Spurs needed someone to provide competition for the oft-injured Destiny Udogie, but that is precisely why the club signed Djed Spence.

Even though the left flank is a bit awkward for Spence, he still looks much better there than Robertson.

The wiser move would have been to give youngster Souza the back-up role alongside Spence.

However, he has to head out on loan in search of playing time while the club is stuck with a noticeably poor alternative in the twilight of his career.
