The Gunners were beaten on penalties by holders Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest after the two sides could not be split in extra time.

Kai Havertz lashed the north Londoners ahead on six minutes, but they were pegged back after Cristhian Mosquera felled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the box, and Ousmane Dembele stroked home the resulting spot-kick.

The final ended in a shootout where Paris emerged victorious. Eberechi Eze and Nuno Mendes both missed from 12 yards, but it was Gabriel who failed to convert the decisive kick as Luis Enrique’s Ligue 1 champions retained their crown.

On X afterwards, Erling Haaland posted a picture of him and his friends smiling, while Tottenham striker Richarlison went a step further, reposting a Tik Tok video of a child laughing on his Instagram story.

It was a jibe at his compatriot Gabriel, with the two Brazilians known to have friendly banter between them whenever their respective sides lose.

Djed Spence also waded in on the fun, retweeting a video Arsenal had posted of him being marshalled tightly by Mosquera during the north London derby earlier in the campaign.

The Gunners’ post was captioned ‘Locked up’ with a padlock emoji, to which Spence quote-tweeted with another padlock and an eyes emoji.

Chelsea’s official X account also joked about their rivals’ defeat, tweeting a picture of their own Champions League trophy, draped in blue ribbons, captioned “Come and visit London’s Home of Trophies. Book your Stadium Tour at Stamford Bridge now.”

It is the second Champions League final that Arsenl have lost in their history, having suffered defeat in 2006 - 20 years prior - as they fell to a 2-1 loss against Barcelona in Paris.

This time, after going ahead early through Havertz, Mikel Arteta’s side tried to see out the game, looking to soak up the growing Paris pressure and rely on their sturdy defensive structure to get them over the line.
