Just one player arrived on Deadline Day despite Spurs boss’ calls for reinforcements

Thomas Frank has said it is unfair to judge Tottenham’s new football leadership structure on the January transfer window.

Deadline Day came and went without a whisper of a rumour at Hotspur Way, with 18-year-old Scottish striker James Wilson the only new arrival in north London.

He joined for the club’s Under-21 side on loan with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

With injuries mounting, and Frank admitting last week that Spurs’ squad was weaker than when the January window opened, a frustrating Deadline Day led captain Cristian Romero to take to Instagram to seemingly express his frustration with the club’s transfer strategy on Monday evening.

Romero said it was “disgraceful but true” that Spurs “only had 11 players available” against Manchester City last weekend. That was the Argentinian’s second social media outburst at the club’s board in under a month.

Despite the criticism, Frank maintained throughout January that the club would not make snap judgements or prioritise short-term fixes, and said it would not be fair to judge them in a notoriously difficult market to operate in.

Indeed, Premier League clubs had their quietest ever winter transfer Deadline Day, as just seven deals were completed.

“I think it’s unfair to judge them after this window, I really, truly do,” Frank told reporters.

“Judge them after the next window and the following window. I understand there is a lot of scrutiny about the club; that’s fair. But let’s be fair.”

Frank has reiterated that Spurs’ majority owners, the Lewis Family, remain committed to investing in the club despite a relatively quiet January window.

But grand plans have been issued before without much conviction at Spurs.

Former sporting director Fabio Paratici’s pointed comments on Thursday that his new employers, Fiorentina, had ‘serious’ owners tallied with Romero’s criticisms and the statement released by Tottenham’s Supporters’ Group in January, which cited a ‘dramatic fall in ambition’.

Asked about Paratici’s comments, Frank laughed off suggestions that Spurs’ owners were not serious about delivering success.

“They [Tottenham] have very, very serious owners. I understand why you need to ask that, but I can only laugh about that,” Frank continued.

“Very, very serious. I speak to them. I’m together with them, so I’m not in doubt [about how serious they are]”
