Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says team was 'too comfortable' after draw with Tottenham
Matthijs De Ligt’s 96th-minute header salvaged a point for Manchester United after two late Tottenham goals sparked a dramatic finale to the Premier League clash.
United looked on course for victory for much of the game after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark, nodding past Guglielmo Vicario from Amad Diallo’s cross.
Tottenham managed to eventually find the leveller with six minutes to go, Mathys Tel seeing his shot deflected off De Ligt as it flew past Lammens. But with United forced to 10 men due to an injury to Benjamin Sesko, Spurs kept up the pressure and thought they’d found a winner through a genius flick from Richarlison, helping Wilson Odobert’s curling shot into the bottom corner.
The hosts looked set to end their dire home form of late, only for De Ligt to go up the other end and power home from a corner in the last minute of added time, ensuring Ruben Amorim’s unbeaten run stretches to five league games.
Ruben Amorim couldn’t help wincing. It had just been put to the Manchester United manager that this was another game they failed to make secure, and his facial expression unintentionally made his thoughts clear. He then very intentionally made his thoughts clear.
This wildly swinging 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium had seemed like a match where it was hard to know how to feel, a response that was oddly fitting since it was between two teams where it’s also hard to know exactly where they are.
Not so for Amorim. He very much knew how he felt.
Miguel Delaney reports from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium:
“This is football,” Tel told BBC Sport. “Sometimes 50-50, sometimes something else. I want to stay positive because the reaction in the second half was really good. We showed great mentality.
"First half we tried things. We were really patient. We lost two points. We get one but we deserved to win this game. Like I say we need to stay positive and keep going. Working hard every day."

"Luckily we got a point,” De Ligt told TNT Sports. “I think we deserved more the way we played, I felt the second half we were a little tired. We didn't get the chance to get out of our half.
"Their first goal was a bit lucky, I'm a bit upset about that, but I'm proud of how the team fought back and got a point at a difficult stadium.
"Last year we lost against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham 1-0, but last week and today you see we have the fire in our bellies to fight and get a point. The season is long, drawing thee games is more important than losing.
"You saw today we are really dangerous, we have a lot of speed up front, we are really stable, we know our strengths and utilise them. Today we had more opportunities to get in behind them because they are vulnerable, we played a good game and I think we deserved a little more."
