A spiky deadline-night at the Stadium of Light ended with a deserved Sunderland win over Burnley, shaped by needle and notable subplots.
Sunderland Echo notes that Régis Le Bris left Lutsharel Geertruida on the bench after Liverpool tried to take over his RB Leipzig loan, a switch Sunderland blocked with no recall clause and no replacement. Habib Diarra made his first start since the 2-1 win over Brentford in August, Chemsdine Talbi returned, and Simon Adingra was absent with a late loan to AS Monaco edging closer, potentially opening talks for Nilson Angulo if Schalke completed Adil Aouchiche.
Before kick-off, a quiet touch landed well. The programme carried a warm tribute to former captain Dan Neil after his loan to Ipswich Town, with his Sunderland contract up this summer.
Club greats Niall Quinn and Peter Reid were in attendance. January signing Melker Ellborg was introduced to the crowd pre-match, though he was not yet eligible for selection.
There was early concern for Nordi Mukiele, who required treatment and again felt discomfort around 37 minutes, but he returned after a spell off the pitch.
The key flashpoint arrived around 67 minutes when Trai Hume and Martin Dúbravka collided, prompting a brief confrontation. Both were booked and the goalkeeper was loudly booed thereafter.
Frustration told late on as Kyle Walker left one on Enzo Le Fée and was cautioned.
The win maintained Sunderland’s record of avoiding back-to-back Premier League defeats, the sixth time they have won immediately after a loss. Burnley offered little in response.
