Despite Upamecano’s extension, Nico Schlotterbeck remains a hot topic at FC Bayern – but Real Madrid are now getting involved

FC Bayern are on the verge of successfully concluding the months-long contract poker with Dayot Upamecano. Nevertheless, the imminent extension with the Frenchman does not mean that the Munich club have stopped their search for reinforcements for the center of defence. On the contrary: behind the scenes, intensive investigations are continuing – and one name keeps cropping up: Nico Schlotterbeck

The Borussia Dortmund central defender has long been considered an interesting candidate for the German record champions, but Bayern are now facing stiff competition for the BVB star – from Real Madrid of all clubs

Schlotterbeck hesitates at BVB – transfer possible in the summer

Schlotterbeck is still under contract in Dortmund until 2027. BVB would like to tie the 26-year-old down for the long term and, according to media reports, made him a lucrative contract offer some time ago. However, a signature is still a long time coming

According to Sport BILD, Schlotterbeck is deliberately playing for time. The international wants to wait and see how BVB’s sporting performance develops this season before making a final decision. A scenario that is causing concern in Dortmund: if Schlotterbeck does not extend his contract, there is a risk that he will leave on a free transfer in the medium term – the absolute worst-case scenario for the Black & Yellows

According to the report, BVB would be willing to discuss a transfer fee of around €50 million or more if the player clearly wanted to move. And this is precisely where international competition comes into play

As Sport BILD further reports, Real Madrid would be an extremely hot candidate in this case. The Whites are on the lookout for a new defensive boss and are apparently preparing for a possible departure of Antonio Rüdiger. With his profile, age and experience, Schlotterbeck fits perfectly into the Madrid requirements profile

The situation is nevertheless highly interesting for FC Bayern. Despite the impending extension with Upamecano, the future of Minjae Kim, whose contract runs until 2028, is still being discussed internally. Should the South Korean leave the club, there would be a renewed need in the center of defence – and Schlotterbeck would be a logical candidate

Bayern are also thinking long-term – transfer-free coup in 2027 in sight

According to Sport BILD, a transfer next summer is not out of the question for Bayern, but only under certain conditions. A concrete move would therefore take place above all if Minjae Kim leaves the club and space and budget are created

In addition, a long-term plan is also being discussed at Säbener Straße: A transfer of Schlotterbeck in 2027 without a transfer fee is considered a very attractive option within FCB. In this case, Bayern could wait patiently – in the hope of bringing the Dortmund top performer to Munich without a transfer fee

One thing is clear: Schlotterbeck remains an issue for FC Bayern, but with Real Madrid in the running, the race for the German international will become much more complicated.
