Leon Goretzka is set for an exciting summer of transfers – and now one of FC Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals is apparently getting involved
As reported by Sport BILD, Bayer Leverkusen have already sounded out the fundamental feasibility of a transfer with the Bayern professional’s advisor
Background: Following the departure of Granit Xhaka, who has moved to Sunderland in the Premier League, the Werkself are looking for a new organizer for the central midfield. Several names are said to be on the list – one of them is Goretzka, whose contract with FC Bayern will not be extended and the 31-year-old would be available on a free transfer in the summer
From Munich’s point of view, the situation is clear. Goretzka is no longer in the plans and the international will leave the club on a free transfer after eight years. So far, however, Goretzka has been one of the top earners
This is apparently where the problem lies for Leverkusen. According to Sport BILD, the initial assessment following the inquiry with the advisor was rather cautious. Goretzka currently favours a future in England. In addition, his salary is said to be well into the double-digit million range – a hurdle for Bayer, which does not operate at the same level as FC Bayern in economic terms
However, there is said to have been no outright rejection and no personal talks have yet taken place between the Leverkusen management and Goretzka. If the midfielder wants to prove that he is still one of the top players in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen could be an attractive prospect
Following the 2023/24 double-winning season, the Werkself are once again planning an attack on the national top flight. An experienced leading player in the center would be essential for this. However, signing Goretzka is likely to prove difficult for Leverkusen.
