Trial begins for Sevilla supporter accused of calling Vinícius a monkey | OneFootball

The Provincial Court of Seville will on Tuesday 22 September hear the case against a Sevilla supporter accused of racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr. According to Superdeporte, the incident came during the match at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on 21 October 2023, part of matchday 10 of the Primera División. The proceedings are considered a significant step in prosecuting hate and discrimination in Spanish professional football.

In the prosecution’s provisional conclusions, the incidents are placed between minutes 83 and 86 of the game.

From a seat in the Gol Norte, close to the pitch, the accused allegedly targeted the Brazilian repeatedly. The document says he mimicked primate gestures, used the word "mono", and made onomatopoeic noises, intending to offend him because of his skin colour.

For these actions, the prosecution is seeking a prison term of one year and nine months for the supporter.

The accusation adds that the player felt frustration, shame and humiliation, with an obvious affront to his dignity.
