FC Bayern is currently testing one of the most exciting defensive talents in the USL Championship: Tyson Espy is completing a trial training session at Säbener Straße.
Several sources from the USA confirmed to the Transfermarkt portal that the 16-year-old central defender is currently auditioning for the German record champions. Espy only moved to Orange County SC on a free transfer from the LAFC Academy in August – and could now become the next young US professional to make the leap to Europe.
The US U16 international has already made three appearances in the USL Championship since moving to California and, despite his age, the 1.88-metre defender is already a permanent member of the professional squad under coach Danny Stone.

Since Espy’s signing, Orange County have spoken openly about wanting to pave the youngster’s way to Europe. „We are determined to provide him with the structure, support and professional environment he needs to develop and ultimately achieve his goal of playing at the highest level in Europe,“ emphasizes General Manager Peter Nugent.
The central defender’s contract runs until the end of 2027 – a longer period that gives US clubs planning security and at the same time increases potential transfer fees.
It’s no coincidence that Bayern has struck a deal for Espy of all people. Through the „Red & Gold“ cooperation with LAFC, Munich has maintained a close exchange with California for years. Talents from the MLS and USLC scene repeatedly appear in Bayern scouting at an early stage. It is therefore quite possible that Espy was already known to Bayern scouts from LA – long before he made his debut with Orange County.
The USL Championship is increasingly developing into an attractive talent league. Espy could now become the next name in this line-up – provided he impresses in trial training. For Bayern, the 16-year-old would be a long-term prospect in central defence. His profile – tall, dynamic, strong in tackles, skilled in the game – means he fits exactly into the talent profile that the record champions have been looking for in global scouting in recent years.
It remains to be seen whether a transfer will take place, but the fact that FC Bayern is keeping a close eye on such potential once again underlines just how international and consistent the record champions‘ youth scouting now is. The opportunity for Espy could be huge – and the next step on a path that many USLC talents have already successfully taken.
