Leeds United's 0-0 draw with Brentford on Saturday night was framed by Elland Road's annual remembrance of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, supporters joined family representatives outside, then a stirring tribute followed inside.
Thunderous applause greeted the teams and officials before kick-off, followed by the customary turning of backs on the action. The emotion was unmistakable.
The football rarely rose above attritional fare, a night heavy on set-pieces and aerial scraps. Neutrals would have switched off by half-time, and frequent tactical timeouts only added to the frustration.
Brenden Aaronson toiled, repeatedly smothered by red and white shirts and seeing little come off. It was another exasperating outing in a difficult spell, and the international break could help, or Daniel Farke may opt to refresh that area.
With Leeds funnelling crosses into the box, Willy Gnonto remained unused. He will not join up with Italy during the break and, if he stays outside his manager’s thinking on such nights, his season might struggle for ignition.
Off-camera, Brentford formed a pre-warm-up huddle. Paraag Marathe and CEO Robbie Evans laid wreaths outside the East Stand, while Ethan Ampadu and Nathan Collins met family representatives to place wreaths by the West Stand. During play Ao Tanaka apologised to the Kop after blazing over, and Ampadu raised Kevin Schade’s challenges with referee Jarred Gillett.
