Millwall will be playing their football in the Championship once again next year after losing out to Hull City over two legs in the play-off semi-finals, as Alex Neil's side begins preparations for the next campaign.

On the whole, it's been an excellent season for Millwall, who very nearly secured automatic promotion to the Premier League for the first time, finishing one point behind Ipswich Town.

Had they won one of the games they had drawn, Premier League football would be theirs, but it wasn't to be, as their 2-0 defeat on aggregate against Hull in the play-offs has resigned them to another year in the second tier.

There is plenty to be positive about for the Lions in the wake of this disappointment; with Neil at the wheel, there is no reason they can't go one better next time around.

Work for the summer transfer window ahead will already be well underway, as Millwall prepare for what their squad may look like next campaign, and have already confirmed the departure of a defensive stalwart.

Millwall's defence has been the foundation for their success this campaign, with each of Zak Sturge, Caleb Taylor, Jake Cooper, and Tristam Crama impressing in Neil's preferred back four.

There have been rotations at times, naturally, with right-back Danny McNamara stepping in on occasion, though the 27-year-old has had to battle with both Crama and Ryan Leonard for game time, and as a result, has found himself on the fringes.

With his contract at The Den due to expire this summer, Millwall have confirmed that he has played his final game for the club ahead of his imminent departure, and he has since sent a message to Lions supporters via Instagram.

Teammate Crama has responded to his post, simply saying: "Legend ❤️".

The Frenchman has stepped in at right-back during his absence to great effect, as the former Brentford defender balanced his game time between there and centre-back, earning himself a place in the Championship Team of the Season.

McNamara managed just over 500 minutes of league football this season across 16 appearances, and just over 600 the campaign before across 13 appearances, having sustained a knee injury in January 2025, keeping him out of action for a while.

His contract was initially due to expire last summer, but he was offered fresh terms as a show of compassion by Millwall, a classy act. Though now, with McNamara over his injury, his time at The Den comes to an end after 166 appearances across all competitions, and he will no doubt be leaving with Lions supporters' best wishes.

With McNamara having made his final appearance for Millwall in their 3-1 victory away to Stoke City, the 27-year-old will be on the lookout for a new permanent club for the first time in his career, having joined the Lions at 15 and signing his first professional contract in 2017.

Millwall's transfer business over the past few years has been nothing short of exceptional, with each of Crama, Femi Azeez, and Mihailo Ivanovic likely to collect substantial fees if they were to depart, whilst Japhet Tanganga, Zian Flemming, and Romain Esse have already followed that path.

McNamara was almost certainly never going to collect a similar sort of fee, and having transitioned into more of a squad player in his final seasons with the club, it's time for the player and club to part ways as Millwall aim to continue their rise.

Neil will be keen to put his first play-off disappointment behind him and prepare his squad for next season, where he hopes they can come back even stronger.
