An era could come to an end at FC Bayern this coming summer. According to information from BILD, there are currently many indications that Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich will end their careers together. The Munich club is therefore already considering who will fill the goalkeeper position in the future.

The role distribution for the post-Neuer era appears to be clear: Jonas Urbig is set to become the new number one. Behind the 23-year-old, club officials want to sign an experienced goalkeeper who, at the same time, isn’t too old.

There also appears to be a clear favorite. According to the report, Finn Dahmen of FC Augsburg is at the top of the club’s internal list of candidates.

Dahmen is Bayern’s top choice

At 28 years old, with his age and Bundesliga experience, he apparently fits the profile Bayern is looking for exactly. However, no concrete talks with Dahmen have taken place yet. His name has reportedly only been discussed internally so far.

This means the search is still in its early stages. Nevertheless, this interest shows that the Munich club is already preparing intensively for a possible shake-up in goal.

Dahmen isn’t the only candidate. According to BILD, Marvin Schwäbe of 1. FC Köln is also on the list. However, the 31-year-old is reportedly ranked behind the Augsburg goalkeeper in the club’s internal rankings.

The key will likely be finding a goalkeeper who brings enough experience to FC Bayern while also accepting the planned new hierarchy. This is because Urbig is not only expected to compete openly for Neuer’s succession in the long term but also to be developed as the new number one.

Will Neuer and Ulreich end their careers together?

The new information is particularly explosive with regard to Neuer and Ulreich. A final decision on Neuer’s future has not yet been publicly announced. According to BILD, however, everything currently points to both the 40-year-old and his longtime backup ending their careers after this season.

For Bayern, this would mean a complete generational shift between the posts. Neuer has been a fixture in goal for the record champions since 2011 and is one of the most important players in the club’s recent history. Ulreich first moved to Munich in 2015 and has been Neuer’s reliable backup for many years.

Should both actually retire at the same time, Urbig would definitively move into the center of Bayern’s plans. Who will be standing behind him in the future remains to be seen. At the moment, however, one thing seems clear: Dahmen is the name the Munich club is focusing on most intensely.
