Clearlake Capital are in talks to acquire the shares of Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, according to reports.
After forming a consortium in 2022 to purchase the club in a £4.25 billion takeover, which included a guarantee of investment over 10 years, from former owner Roman Abramovich, Boehly is now discussing parting ways with Chelsea after four years.
As reported by the Financial Times, Boehly and Walter are now holding conversations with Clearlake Capital, co-owned by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, who currently own more than 60 per cent of Chelsea.
Clearlake own 61.5 per cent, while Boehly, Walter and Hansjorg Wyss own the remaining 38.5 per cent. However, Boehly and Clearlake share joint control and equal decision-making at the club.
In recent years, Boehly and Clearlake have been at odds over the plan and strategy for running Chelsea. If any tensions remain, they could be resolved if they sell their shares.
Eghbali has been the public figure seemingly running the show at Chelsea, and the club's supporters have targeted him during difficult runs, including when fans turned on him at the beginning of 2026, away at Fulham's Craven Cottage, after the appointment of Liam Rosenior following Enzo Maresca's departure.
It's reported that negotiations over a sale of their shareholding have now been revived at a time when Walter is under pressure to sell his other high-profile assets. However, it was not yet certain that a deal would be struck.
As relayed by Forbes, The Wall Street Journal revealed that Federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission have been examining whether Walter or his businesses committed fraud by concealing financial ties while borrowing billions of dollars in loans from insurers he controls.
It alleged that Walter's company, TWG Global, had not disclosed $16bn in loans funnelled to his insurance firm, Delaware Life.
Walter is now seeking to quickly offload his investments to help settle the loans that require repayment.
He recently sold the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal valuing the team at $12.5bn, despite having only bought the franchise in June 2025.
The reason for Boehly's potential exit remains unclear. But given his battles with Clearlake Capital and his ties to Walter, who would have had his corner in any Chelsea-related issues, he may have decided to step away to avoid future struggles and the need to find another investor to buy Walter out.
Boehly is currently the Chelsea chairman. However, Clearlake reportedly intends to take over the chairmanship from Boehly at the end of May 2027. The Telegraph reported that the takeover agreement could see the chairmanship passed between the club's owners every five years.
As reported by The Telegraph, with Boehly and Walter open to selling their stakes, the club would be valued at more than £5bn.
