Paris Saint-Germain rubber-stamped their status as Europe’s most dominant team on August 12th when they defeated Europa League winners Aston Villa to claim a second straight UEFA Super Cup title in Salzburg. The Parisians successfully defended their Champions League trophy back in May when they beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, and now they have become just the second team in the last 35 years to successfully secure back-to-back Super Cups as well.

As such, it should come as no surprise to hear that the defending champions are the favourites to claim a famous three-peat of Champions League crowns next season. The latest online soccer odds currently position Luis Enrique’s men as the narrow 5/1 favourite to reign over Europe once again in 2026/27, with the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona expected to provide the sternest competition.

But while those are the contenders that everyone already knows and is fully aware of, some others are currently flying under the radar as they look to make a splash in the continent’s elite club competition next season. Here are two teams that every European football fan should keep their eyes on in the upcoming Champions League campaign.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s rebirth over the last few years under Unai Emery has been meteoric. The Villans were battling relegation when the Spaniard first took charge of the club nearly four years ago. Since then, the former Villarreal boss has led the West Midlands club to two top-four finishes in the last three seasons, as well as the Europa League title last season. Now, he will lead Villa into the Champions League for the second time, and if their previous efforts are anything to go by, Emery’s side isn’t one to be written off.

Two years ago, the Villans defied their lowly expectations as they marched their way to the UCL quarterfinals, beating the likes of Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Club Brugge along the way. They were ultimately knocked out by eventual champions PSG in the last-eight, but not before giving the French team an almighty scare as they very nearly rallied back from a 5-1 aggregate deficit, ultimately losing 5-4 after a gripping second leg at Villa Park.

The upcoming campaign will be one of minor upheaval, however, as Villa have seen the squad that Emery carefully constructed be somewhat dismantled by some of English football’s big boys. Chelsea forked out a British record fee of £117m to sign Morgan Rogers, while Manchester United also poached midfielder Youri Tielemans for some £35m. In their place come highly-rated Swiss World Cup star Johan Manzambi, as well as Portuguese international João Gomes, both of whom have huge boots to fill.

But the fact remains that Aston Villa aren’t a team to be written off this season. Manager Emery is a European specialist, winning the Europa League four times throughout his storied career. Add to that the fact that the Villans have a newfound continental experience that they didn’t have in the Champions League two seasons ago, experience that will serve them well when they inevitably have to travel to face the likes of PSG, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. A run to the semifinals wouldn’t be the wildest prediction.

Galatasaray

Turkish football has been making major waves in recent seasons. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Romelu Lukaku, Nathan Aké, and Dušan Vlahović have all headed to the Super Lig this summer, joining heavyweights such as Fenerbahce, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor. But it’s Galatasaray that currently dominates the footballing landscape in the country.

In recent seasons, they have added household names to their squad, such as Leroy Sane, Mauro Icardi, and İlkay Gündoğan, all of whom have helped the Lions claim four straight Super Lig titles. But the undisputed jewel in the crown is talismanic striker Victor Osimhen.

The Turkish champions completed quite the coup when they snapped up the Nigerian hitman on a season-long loan deal from Napoli two years ago. Even more eyebrows were raised last summer when Gala forked out €75m to make that loan deal a permanent transfer, obliterating the Turkish transfer record in the process. But boy has Osimhen proven to be worth every penny, netting 59 goals in 74 appearances across his two years in Istanbul.

Last season, the club made waves in the Champions League. They eliminated Italian giants Juventus in the round of 32, as well as twice beating English Premier League side Liverpool on home turf before eventually losing to the Reds at Anfield and bowing out of the competition. Now, they head back into the tournament, having grown from that harrowing experience on Merseyside.

Galatasaray will be aiming to go one better than they did in reaching the last 16 last term, and a quarterfinal run is without question a possibility. Next season marks 23 years since the last time a team from outside Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues (England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France) won the competition. Gala are the most likely to end that drought in 2026/27, but if that were to come to fruition, it would still represent an almighty shock.
