UCL / Monaco – Manchester City: heated exchanges between two senior players!
AS Monaco came within a whisker of pulling off a sensational upset on Wednesday night against the reigning European champions. In a fiery Stade Louis II, Adi Hütter’s men dug deep to snatch a 2-2 draw with Manchester City in the dying seconds. Trailing 2-1, they turned to Eric Dier—an experienced defender with a knack for big moments—who coolly converted a penalty he had won himself. Nico Gonzalez’s reckless, albeit accidental, boot to the face required a VAR review, but the referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot.
This flashpoint didn’t go unnoticed among the City ranks. Bernardo Silva, speaking to TNT Sports, admitted he hadn’t seen the incident before bursting into laughter and saying:
“Eric Dier, he’s known for diving.” The Portuguese international and former Monaco man couldn’t resist a cheeky dig in the tunnel.
The man in question wasted no time firing back: “I heard Bernardo saying I dived. I’ll have to watch it back, but there was definitely contact with my face.”
Controversy aside, Monaco can take pride in standing toe-to-toe with City, who dominated for large stretches.
“It was a really tough match against a great opponent. We’re happy to take a point,” Dier admitted.
Pinned back for much of the contest, the Monégasques made the most of their rare chances to threaten and ultimately salvage a result. In a European campaign where every point is precious, this hard-fought draw against Guardiola’s powerhouse feels like a moral victory—and could prove crucial as the tournament unfolds.
