Paris Saint-Germain were held to a draw by Newcastle United (1-1) on Wednesday, January 28 at the Parc des Princes, during matchday 8 of the Champions League group stage. It was a frustrating result for the Parisian club, who had hoped to secure direct qualification but will now have to go through the play-offs to continue their European campaign.

Paris actually got off to the perfect start. After Ousmane Dembélé missed a penalty as early as the 4th minute, Vitinha opened the scoring in the 8th, rewarding a high-intensity start and clear territorial dominance. But just before the break, Joe Willock brought the sides level (45+2), cooling the Parc des Princes atmosphere.

Despite dominating possession (67%) and creating several clear chances in the second half, PSG failed to regain the lead. This draw means both teams will have to contest the play-offs, as neither managed to break into the top eight at the end of this stage.
