UEFA confirmed the referees for Wednesday’s Champions League matchday seven, with István Kovács for Galatasaray v Atlético de Madrid, Chris Kavanagh for Slavia Prague v Barcelona, and Danny Makkelie for Atalanta v Athletic Club.

At Istanbul’s Ali Sami Yen, Kovács will have Rob Dieperink as VAR. The 41-year-old also took charge of the most recent Champions League final, PSG v Inter, a 5-0 result.

Kovács previously handled Atlético in the 2021-22 quarter-final first leg at Manchester City, a 1-0 defeat, then oversaw the group game at Bruges the following season, 2-0, and the 2023-24 last-16 first leg at Inter, 1-0.

Kavanagh, 40, will referee Barcelona for the first time, having officiated Slavia Prague at Inter on matchday two this season, 3-0. Stuart Attwell will oversee VAR.

Makkelie will take charge of Atalanta v Athletic for the first time with both clubs, with Michael Salisbury as VAR.

Spain’s Carlos del Cerro Grande will act as VAR for Chelsea v Pafos, where Belgian Erik Lambrechts is the referee.
