Carlos Espí’s senior Spain bow has been put on hold, the Valencia-born striker omitted from the matchday squad to face Czech Republic in the UEFA Nations League in Oviedo. He and Pau Cubarsí were the two left out at the Carlos Tartiere.
According to Superdeporte, Espí was promoted from the under-21s to cover Ferran Torres’s injury. With Nico Williams returning to Bilbao after being hurt against Croatia, Spain’s camp stood at 25, so Luis de la Fuente had to cut two to meet the 23-player limit.
Espí had started the window with the under-21s, scoring five against San Marino before the step up. His move prompted a replacement, Málaga striker Chupe has joined the under-21 group to prepare for Romania on Tuesday.
Fabián Ruiz’s late departure to Paris for the birth of his first child does not alter selection. UEFA rules lock the final 23 at 23:59 on the eve of the game, so neither omission can be added for tonight’s third Group A3 fixture.
The former Levante forward must now wait for a possible chance in Spain’s final match of this window, the trip to Croatia on Tuesday at 20:45.
