UEFA has welcomed FIFA’s decision to abandon a plan to sell a stake in the World Cup, while sharply criticising Gianni Infantino.
UEFA said in a statement on Saturday that it was pleased by the U-turn and thanked those who demonstrated that the sport is not for sale.
The European body condemned secret, hurried plotting by unnamed figures and urged that those responsible be identified and held to account, saying the proposals’ benefits to the game were highly doubtful.
It contrasted Infantino’s 2016 campaign pledges on transparency and the stewardship of FIFA money with a clandestine, non-transparent deal he attempted to push through, insisting those promises were not kept.
UEFA framed the outcome as a victory for football, while arguing the episode should not end here and that the work of rebuilding trust in FIFA is only just beginning.
