UEFA ‘to have opened’ disciplinary case over possible Red Star tribute to Ratko Mladic | OneFootball

According to The Athletic, UEFA is understood to have opened disciplinary proceedings against Red Star Belgrade after supporters allegedly paid tribute to Ratko Mladic, who died on Thursday at 84.

The banner was reportedly displayed during the Europa League play-off second leg away to Viktoria Plzen on the night of his death.

His name was said to have been chanted during the match, and the Serbian club are understood to have posted a photo of the banner on X. Red Star lost the tie 5-4 on aggregate.

The wording reportedly read General, eternal glory and thank you. UEFA is said to have acted on three counts, racist or discriminatory behaviour, displaying an inappropriate message at a sporting event, and improper conduct of the team.

Mladic was convicted in 2017 of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995. Nicknamed the Butcher of the Balkans, he is widely held responsible for the Srebrenica massacre in July 1995, when about 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed.
