SC Villa announced on Wednesday the death of their captain, David Owori, 27, following a brutal street attack near his home in Kampala. The club said in a statement that he was assaulted in the street and died from his injuries.

Owori was an Uganda international and a versatile player, comfortable at right-back or in midfield.

He first played for SC Villa from 2018 to 2021 before moving to Europe with Vélez in Spain and Utsiktens in Sweden. He returned in 2023 to the Kampala side and helped them claim a record 17th league title.

The attack happened only hours before the club’s announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

The killing comes amid rising crime in the capital, where gangs have increasingly targeted public figures.
