The contract negotiations between FC Bayern and Dayot Upamecano are still at a standstill. The centre-back, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has now clearly defined his terms – putting the German record champions under pressure. While Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain wait in the background, the sporting management around Max Eberl has to make a delicate fundamental decision
An extension seemed to be within reach as early as the spring of 2025. According to kicker information, both sides were largely in agreement, but the final signature never came. Since then, there has been radio silence. It was only in September that the parties agreed to re-engage after the transfer period
But there was no breakthrough before Christmas either. Instead, the 27-year-old’s camp has now made clear demands, as reported by the trade journal – including the desired framework conditions and additional clauses. The player’s side does not believe that further talks are necessary at present
The message is clear: either Bayern accept the package – or Upamecano will leave the club on a free transfer after this season

One of the biggest points of contention remains the financial classification. In terms of performance, Upamecano sees himself on a par with the team’s top earners. But that is precisely where Bayern apparently do not want to place him
Particularly piquant: both Alphonso Davies and new signing Jonathan Tah received hand money in the double-digit millions for their contract signings. These sums now serve as a reference for the Upa camp – and are causing a need for discussion
While Munich are being cautious, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be willing to meet the defender’s demands, according to reports from abroad. Upamecano is officially allowed to negotiate with other clubs at the turn of the year – a crucial period in which Bayern run the risk of losing control
There is a growing conviction at the club that they do not have to fulfil every wish. Club icon Uli Hoeneß recently emphasized that a clear „no“ has become more important again in today’s soccer. After the costly extensions last spring, there is little willingness to give in financially again
For Bayern, however, a transfer-free departure of a defender at this level would be a massive sporting and structural loss. At the same time, Kompany’s defensive planning for the coming years is at stake
Upamecano can imagine a future in Munich in principle, but only on his terms. Bayern, on the other hand, are keeping the door open, but not at any price
The decisive phase of this poker game begins with the start of the new year. Upamecano will hear offers from Europe and Bayern will have to decide how much their defensive boss is really worth to them.
