Former Gunners keeper may not face his old club
Emi Martinez could miss Aston Villa’s Premier League clash with Arsenal this weekend after he pulled out of the Villans’ 4-3 win over Brighton in the warm-up.
The Argentine pulled up injured at the Amex Stadium and was forced to be replaced in the starting lineup by back-up goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
It thus throws into doubt whether the World Cup winner will be able to face his former club at Villa Park on Saturday.
Unai Emery, himself formerly of Arsenal and now Villa manager, issued an update on his first-choice shot-stopper at full-time on the Sussex coast.
"He was feeling pain in his back,” Emery explained.
“He couldn't even do a warm-up normally. We have Marco, who is a fantastic guy and professional."
On Bizot, who was signed in the summer from Ligue 1 side Brest, Emery said: "He accepts his role.
“He signed here to be the sub for Emi Martinez.
“He is ready when he is available and awaits his moment. Here [at Brighton] it is very difficult to defend corners.
“How he saved the last action was fantastic. He is so mature."
Arsenal, meanwhile, re-established their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka got the goals as Mikel Arteta’s men continued their unbeaten run.
