It is not uncommon for a team like FC Barcelona to be connected to most players every summer. Even players that the club seemingly had no prior connection to always seem to find themselves linked with the Catalan giants. However, there are also cases that make much more sense than others when it comes to the interest of Barcelona.

Nico Williams, the extraordinary winger who impressed for Athletic Club last season and is impressing for the Spanish National team this season has been on the radar of Barcelona for quite some time. According to many reports, he is the primary target for La Blaugrana this summer.

However, it appears that while many Barcelona players would love to see him dress up as a Blaugrana this summer, his own teammates seem to think that will not end up happening.

“It’s normal to hear all these rumors about him potentially going to Barça, Chelsea, Arsenal… because he is a player who right now could play for most teams in the world with what he is showing, with the growth he has had this season, and because he is very decisive in many situations.”

Moreover, the 27-year-old Spanish goalkeeper believes that the Barcelona target is currently contracted to Athletic Club and that is where he sees his future:

“For now he is an Athletic player… I really enjoy seeing him defend the Athletic jersey, the national team, and sharing the locker room with him. Nico has a contract with Athletic until 2027, he is very happy at home, and I see him with very clear ideas about his future.”

Simon not only outlined what he believes to be the appropriate future pathway for his young teammate at both club and national levels, but also took a dig at the media for continually linking him to FC Barcelona:

“The press in summer, when there is no football, focuses on the transfer market, and it’s normal for these things to happen.”

It remains to be seen what happens between Barcelona and Nico Williams, but many credible reports suggest the interest is concrete. However, the focus for the Catalan club at the moment is to first return to the 1:1 rule while Nico’s focus will currently be on helping Spain in the European Championship.
