A fast-paced Bundesliga clash between Stuttgart and Leipzig delivered exactly what many expected: quality, intensity and chances at both ends. After Leipzig started brighter and even struck the woodwork early in the second half, a costly defensive error allowed Deniz Undav to continue his red-hot form and give Stuttgart the win.
Here is our detailed match report:
Stuttgart and Leipzig produced a highly entertaining Bundesliga contest, with both sides showing the quality expected from teams chasing Champions League football next season.
The match began at a high tempo, with chances coming at both ends during an exciting opening half.
Leipzig looked sharper in the early stages and controlled the first 15 minutes. Their energetic start was hardly surprising given their preparation time. Unlike Stuttgart, who only played FC Porto in Europe on Thursday, Leipzig have had a full week to prepare as they are not involved in international competitions this season.
But as the half progressed, Stuttgart gradually grew into the match and began to take control. The home side enjoyed the better spells of possession and created several promising opportunities, although they were unable to convert their dominance into a goal before the break.
One of the best chances came just before halftime when Jamie Leweling blasted a well-taken free kick toward the goal. Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt reacted well, however, making an important save to keep the score level at 0-0.
The game exploded into life shortly after half-time.
Within minutes of the second half kicking off, Leipzig came agonisingly close to taking the lead when they struck the woodwork. But the visitors’ bad luck quickly turned into a costly mistake.
Moments later, Leipzig carelessly lost possession near their own penalty area. The ball fell to Deniz Undav, who has been the most in-form German striker this season. The Stuttgart forward showed exactly why everybody keeps talking about him and his must-inclusion in the next DFB-selection, as he calmly finished the ball into the net to give the hosts the lead.
The atmosphere in the stadium and among the players was hot and hectic, it was a great showing for the Bundesliga!
Raum, Diomande, Nusa and Baumgartner all came close to scoring as Nübel had to make some important saves. It just seemed like the luck wasn't on Leipzig's side tonight.
This does not mean however, that a win for Stuttgart was undeserving - the hosts had very dominant phases in this game, quite typical for Hoeneß-ball, and could have easily added one or two goals to the board. Undav himself had a huge chance in the dying seconds of the match, but on this occasion, the striker was a bit “too cool” during his finish and Vandevoordt was able to save his shot.
After a first half full of quality football and a dramatic start to the second, the match fully lived up to its billing - and the hosts came out on top tonight and are now on par with Hoffenheim on 50 points.
