Liverpool’s summer transfer activity remains understated. While some names continue to circle the rumour mill, tangible progress has been limited. According to The Athletic, the pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has slowed, with Anfield sources viewing his acquisition as a “market opportunity” due to his contract situation.
“If they can’t agree a deal with Palace, then it’s unlikely they will pursue a Plan B.” That stance feels like a gamble, especially given the current defensive situation.

The recent £26million capture of Giovanni Leoni from Parma gives manager Arne Slot four senior centre-backs, but question marks remain. Joe Gomez’s injury history is well-documented, and Ibrahima Konate’s future is uncertain with contract talks dragging. “Getting Guehi on board would provide greater peace of mind,” the piece rightly observes.
One of the few confirmed pieces of business is Lewis Koumas’ loan move to Birmingham City. He turned down interest from Sheffield United, Wrexham, Hull and Preston North End in favour of Championship action.
Kostas Tsimikas also looks likely to depart. “Roma have now made an approach to sign him on a season-long loan,” though Liverpool would prefer a permanent sale.
Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott has admirers in Germany. RB Leipzig are monitoring the situation, but no formal bid has arrived. At £50million, his price tag will deter many.
While Marc Guehi remains a defensive possibility, the real focus is up front. Alexander Isak is top of the list, and Liverpool are “prepared to table another bid” for the Newcastle forward after an initial £110million offer was rejected.
Slot is clear in his intent. “He would like to see the club sign another attacker,” as The Athletic reports, and it’s hard to argue. Following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Liverpool’s attacking options lack depth, particularly when injuries hit.
Loan interest continues to mount for several young talents including James McConnell, Jayden Danns and Kaide Gordon. Strategic loans could benefit both player development and squad balance, especially with European football demanding squad rotation.
This update from The Athletic offers both reassurance and a few raised eyebrows. While it’s encouraging to see Giovanni Leoni arrive, the idea that Liverpool might not have a Plan B if Marc Guehi doesn’t sign feels careless. We’ve been burned before when relying on centre-backs with fitness issues.
Up top, there’s genuine excitement. The club’s willingness to spend big on Alexander Isak is refreshing. He’s Premier League-proven and still improving. But if Newcastle play hardball, do we have an alternative lined up, or are we pinning everything on one target again?
As for Harvey Elliott, many fans don’t want to see him go. He’s technically brilliant, homegrown and improving. £50million is a fair valuation, but sentiment runs strong.
Lastly, it’s hard to ignore the emotional vacuum left by Jota’s tragic passing. The dressing room needs a lift and the pitch needs a spark. Let’s hope Slot and the recruitment team bring both before the window slams shut.
