As expected, the atmosphere was electric at the Millerntor-Stadion for this season’s last Hamburg derby. However, there was very little to report in terms of actions on the pitch in the first half.
Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit, who was Hamburg’s only change from their goalless draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, only played the first ten minutes due to injury. Hamburg-born Fábio Baldé came in his place for his first appearance in 2026, and he had the only shot on target in the cagey 45 minutes.
Nikola Vasilj also made saves from Bakery Jatta and Damion Downs, but HSV’s attackers were offside both times. St. Pauli’s only away win so far came in the reverse fixture, but they finished the half without a shot on target in front of their rapturous fans.
Ricky-Jade Jones was a candidate for the starting lineup after making an impact off the bench at Signal Iduna Park, and the striker replaced Martijn Kaars for the second half. As it’s common in derby games in Germany, there was a lengthy wait before the game resumed due to fireworks.
There was a much better tempo after the restart. In particular, the visitors were pushing for an opening goal. Luka Vuskovic, who was playing in this fixture for the very first time, had the best chances early on with a long-range effort and a header from the corner-kick.
Without the elusive shot on target, St. Pauli also had their moment with Jones denied by an excellent last-ditch tackle by HSV’s captain, Nicolás Capaldo. Moments later, his St. Pauli counterpart, Jackson Irvine, makes his return from foot injury ahead of schedule.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes’ first save of the game came in the 75th minute with an unconvincing stop from Eric Smith’s header. HSV’s goalie was tested twice in the next five minutes, but he showed more composure to deny Danel Sinani and Arkadiusz Pyrka.
The point helped St. Pauli climb off the bottom place before Heidenheim and Mainz’s home games against RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg, respectively. Hamburg failed to score a Stadtderby goal in their first season back in the Bundesliga.
St. Pauli will have another home game four days later with the rescheduled fixture against RB Leipzig. HSV’s next match will see the return of Vincent Kompany to Volksparkstadion with the visit of the free-scoring Bayern Munich side.
