James Bree earned the plaudits on social media after his full Charlton Athletic debut on Saturday.

Charlton Athletic compounded Sheffield United's miserable start to the season with a late winner at Bramall Lane, making Chris Wilder's homecoming a day to forget for the Blades.

After a close contest across the 90 minutes, the game looked set to play out as a 0-0 draw, but fate had other plans in store for the Addicks, as late drama unfolded in Wilder's first game back in the dugout as Blades manager.

Substitute striker Tanto Olaofe will take the plaudits for the goal, sliding a close-range effort under United keeper Michael Cooper, but the wonderful work of full debutant James Bree served the chance on a silver platter for the attacker to turn home.

The match-winning assist wasn't the only contribution to his side's triumph though, as the on-loan defender swept the Man of the Match award, thanks to an assured display on the right flank for Nathan Jones' side.

Bree collected plaudits on social media from his fans after the match for his performance, and there have been plenty of calls to make his loan deal from Southampton permanent in January, when his loan deal expires.

Saturday's victory at Bramall Lane was the first win for the newly-promoted side since the opening day of the season, which was a much-needed boost for Charlton supporters after a difficult few weeks since then.

One man who was at the centre of attention of the supporters after the match was Bree, who set up the winning goal, and put in a superb performance, where he created four chances, won 50% of all of his duels, and was named Man of the Match on his full debut.

Whilst Olaofe racked up plenty of praise for his dramatic late goal too, fans certainly didn't forget their unsung hero, and took to X to shower the Southampton loanee with praise in the wake of the victory.

"James Bree ain't half bad is he," summarised one happy Charlton supporter.

"James Bree is very good at football," another supporter also stated after the wing-back's memorable full debut.

"James Bree appreciation post.

"How good was he yesterday on full debut? Hardly put a foot wrong and the composure to pick out Tanto for the winner was quality!" said another Addicks fan on X.

Elsewhere on X, another elated Charlton supporter said: "James Bree was the best player on the pitch today. What a performance from him."

There were already calls from the Charlton faithful to do everything they can to retain the 27-year-old after January, with one supporter saying: "Bree was unreal, keep him after January."

After a frustrating couple of years at Southampton, Bree was reunited with former boss at Luton Town and St Mary's, Jones, having made a short-term loan move to The Valley on deadline day.

The loan signing is only until January though, as the 27-year-old was seen as the short-term option to cover the right side of Charlton's defence, and potentially sign summer transfer target Shinnosuke Fukuda on a free transfer in the winter.

However, if Bree maintains the performance levels he showed on his full debut, Jones may opt to explore a permanent deal for the defender, instead of going after the Japanese full-back.

Now the Southampton loanee has laid down the gauntlet on his full debut for the Addicks, Jones will be faced with a big dilemma come January, as he will have to decide whether he wants to make the loan move permanent.
