Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson briefly disappeared down the tunnel after losing a contact lens during Sweden’s 3-1 Nations League win over Poland in Solna, a result sealed by Benjamin Nygren, Yasin Ayari and Viktor Gyokeres that extended their perfect start.

The 27-year-old made his first start of the autumn international break, having come on late against Romania last week. After a collision he received treatment, circled the pitch and hurried to the dressing room before returning a couple of minutes later. Sweden were 1-0 up at the time.

“He [the Polish player] threw his hand up in my face,” Gudmundsson said. “It was a bit unsightly. I think he [the referee] lost some clear free kicks for us today.” He told Sportbladet.

“I needed to get that extra lens in quickly and put it in. I tried to hurry as much as I could. It went a little slower than I had hoped, but it worked out.”

He resumed at left-back, though Poland levelled a couple of minutes before half-time through Sebastian Szymański.

At the interval he limped off after blocking a shot, yet he played on to complete the 90 minutes. “I blocked a shot right at the end [of the first half] and hit it in the wrong place,” he explained. “Damn boring first half. But glad everything went well.”

Gudmundsson will hope to keep his place on Friday when Sweden visit Tarik Muharemovic’s Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he is due to face an Elland Road teammate.
