Dayot Upamecano has backed Jonathan Tah after the Germany defender was targeted with racist abuse following his penalty miss in the 2026 World Cup defeat to Paraguay.

According to BuLi News, the Bayern Munich centre-back said he messaged Tah after the match and believes his teammate has the strength and mindset to move past the incident.

Upamecano also defended Tah’s decision to take the spot-kick, describing it as an act of leadership and responsibility. He stressed Tah’s importance to Germany and Bayern.

The France international condemned the abuse, saying racism has no place in football. He urged Tah not to dwell on it and to keep giving his all.

Tah has since received widespread backing from teammates and supporters, with Upamecano’s remarks adding to that support as calls continue for stronger action against racism in the game.
