FC Bayern are continuing to work hard on a contract extension for Dayot Upamecano – but so far without a breakthrough. The 27-year-old central defender’s contract expires in the summer of 2026 and negotiations are proving tough. President Herbert Hainer spoke to the Abendzeitung München newspaper about the current situation and emphasized that the club is continuing to work on an agreement: „We are in talks with Upamecano. But of course it is also an important decision for him.“

The club boss also made it clear that Munich have not lost their optimism: „In principle, he is very happy at Bayern. I am cautiously optimistic.“

Difficult negotiations – Bayern want to extend

It is no secret that Bayern are determined to keep the French international, and Christoph Freund and Max Eberl Hainer have repeatedly emphasized in recent weeks that a contract extension is their top priority

However, Upamecano’s outstanding form in recent months has opened up the market for him. As Freund has already explained, the defender currently has „a big market“. Several top European clubs – including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and clubs from the Premier League – are said to be keeping a close eye on the defensive player’s development

Hope rests on the „Kompany effect“

According to information from Sky Sport Switzerland, Munich are quite prepared to go one better when it comes to salary. A salary of 20 million euros per year is being discussed, which would put Upamecano in the ranks of the top earners

Coach Vincent Kompany is also playing a central role in the talks. Under the Belgian, Upamecano has developed into one of the best central defenders in Europe. Munich are hoping that the relationship of trust between player and coach will ultimately be the deciding factor in his decision to stay
