The future of Dayot Upamecano is still unclear – and a decision from Madrid could now have a significant impact on the poker for the Bayern defender. While FCB have been trying for months to extend the 27-year-old’s expiring contract, Real Madrid are apparently sounding out the market for central defenders intensively. An internal decision by the Whites is also likely to have been closely noted in Munich.
The Athletic reports that Real Madrid have been monitoring Ibrahima Konaté for months and seriously considered signing the Liverpool star. However, the French international has now been informed that the Madrilenians are no longer interested in a transfer. A remarkable move, as Konaté was long considered one of the main candidates for the Blancos‘ future.
However, this withdrawal is not a sign of satisfaction – on the contrary, Madrid are still planning to renew their defensive core. The reasons are obvious: David Alaba’s future is uncertain after recurring injuries, Antonio Rüdiger is not getting any younger and Éder Militão is also not yet at 100% after tearing his cruciate ligament.

Real’s decision to drop Konaté opens the door to other candidates – and one of them is Dayot Upamecano. The Bayern star has been repeatedly linked with the Whites in the past. He has everything Madrid are looking for in the coming years: pace, athleticism, leadership quality and, above all, top form.
Max Eberl has repeatedly emphasized that Munich are keen to extend his contract. Upamecano is also seen internally as an indispensable cornerstone in Kompany’s system alongside Jonathan Tah. But an agreement has yet to be reached – and that is fuelling speculation.
According to several reports, financial differences are said to be the biggest point of contention so far. The player himself is avoiding clear statements about his future, which is seen as deliberate tactics in Munich.
Because one thing is clear: as soon as Real Madrid get serious, the poker for Upamecano will be completely different. The coming weeks are likely to be decisive.
