Upamecano’s future uncertain: This is FC Bayern’s plan B

FC Bayern want to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, but there is apparently already a plan B for the central defense.

FC Bayern are still working on a contract extension with Dayot Upamecano. The French defender has publicly emphasized that it is „not about the money“ and that talks with the club are continuing. At the same time, there are increasing signs that the decision on his future will take some time – and those responsible are therefore apparently thinking about alternatives.

Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg now explains what Bayern’s internal plan is if Upamecano leaves the club: „If Upamecano leaves, then they’ll bring in an experienced player: Guehi, Schlotterbeck or perhaps Konaté or someone completely different. If Upamecano is extended and Minjae Kim is sold, then it could well be that highly talented players like Tati will play a role at Bayern for this vacant position.“

Names such as Marc Guéhi, Nico Schlotterbeck and Ibrahima Konaté are high up on the list of experienced alternatives, and all three players are said to have already been scouted.

At the same time, Bayern are also keeping an eye on the youth market. Tylel Tati from FC Nantes in particular has come into focus. Despite his age, the 17-year-old centre-back has already clocked up over 900 professional minutes and impresses with his composure on the ball, great pace and intelligence. However, Nantes are demanding at least €50 million and are not planning a winter sale. A move would be considered in the summer at the earliest – and would be more of an investment in the future than an immediate transfer.

Tati’s profile would fit particularly well if Upamecano were to stay but Kim were to be sold. Bayern are planning for the long term and want to diversify their central defence with both experience and talent in order to be prepared for the coming years.

Upamecano keeps Bayern bosses in suspense

This plan is in line with developments at Upamecano in recent weeks. Bayern are continuing talks with his advisor, but the 27-year-old is keeping the sporting management waiting. After the 6-2 defeat to Freiburg, he merely said: „We’re discussing it with Bayern. We’ll see what happens.“ The news from BILD head of soccer Christian Falk that Upamecano is only considering three clubs: Bayern, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain adds to the tension.

While Liverpool FC are out of the running, Real and PSG are already sounding out the market intensively. Both clubs are planning rebuilds in defence and see Upamecano as a player who could immediately take on a leading role in their systems. PSG in particular continue to pursue the goal of building a team with a strong French core.

For Bayern, Vincent Kompany remains the biggest trump card. Upamecano is considered an admirer of the coach, who has full confidence in him and has made him one of the best central defenders in Europe. Bayern’s hope: this sporting environment could ultimately have a stronger impact than the international offers.
