Sheffield Wednesday's chances of signing Jamie Vardy this summer are looking increasingly slim

Sheffield Wednesday have a very slim chance of being able to complete the signing of Jamie Vardy this summer.

According to Talksport journalist Alex Crook, the financial picture at Hillsborough will make it very difficult to secure a deal for the 39-year-old.

The forward is currently a free agent following his exit from Cremonese, having departed at the end of the previous campaign after they were relegated from Serie A.

Vardy contributed seven goals and two assists for the Italian club from 29 appearances in the top flight.

There are now a lot of question marks over his future, with no decision yet made on the next step in his career.

Vardy is a boyhood fan of Sheffield Wednesday, which has fuelled speculation that he could make the switch to Hillsborough.

Vardy has been linked with a sensational move to Brazilian club Sao Paulo, but it remains to be seen whether he would be willing to move to South America at this stage of his career.

Crook has claimed that Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of signing the 39-year-old are quite low even though the player does prefer a move back to English football at this stage.

He believes that the financial constraints on the League One side at this stage would make it tough to get a deal over the line for the former Leicester City player.

“[Sao Paulo interest] doesn't surprise me because Jamie Vardy still looks in top physical condition,” said Crook, via Talksport.

"He did pretty well over in Italy.

“I think he'd prefer a return to English football, but I wouldn't totally rule out a move to Brazil.

“Who knows, that might be the next chapter of the documentary that I've just started watching about his incredible career.

“But he's certainly got no shortage of interest. Sheffield Wednesday, his boyhood club, have chanced their arm.

“I think financially that's quite a difficult deal for the Owls to do.”

West Ham have also emerged as a potential option to sign Vardy following their relegation to the Championship.

However, the Hammers’ attempts to sign Joel Piroe indicate that the Leeds United forward could be their preferred option at this stage.

It’s understood that it will be quite difficult to make an attractive proposition to Vardy under the current financial restrictions at Sheffield Wednesday.

Arise Capital completed their takeover of the Owls in May, taking them out of administration, and their leader David Storch has confirmed that the former England international is someone he would like to sign.

How Sheffield Wednesday fans feel about Jamie Vardy signing

Sheffield Wednesday fans have been trying to appeal to Vardy’s heartstrings, telling him to sign for his boyhood club.

The 39-year-old has been told to finish his career at Hillsborough to complete his story.

However, some supporters are wary of paying over the odds for him, insisting that a deal should only be done if he’s willing to take a significant pay cut.

Sheffield Wednesday began their League One campaign with a 2-1 win away to Leyton Orient.

Jamie Vardy deal would be a real coup for Sheffield Wednesday

There are understandably a lot of clubs circling around Vardy following his exit from Cremonese, so of course it will be tough for Sheffield Wednesday to complete a deal.

The forward would have to join on the basis that this is the final stop in his career, and he doesn’t need a huge salary to join his boyhood club.

If he is willing to play in League One, then there must be a way to strike an agreement to bring him to Hillsborough, as it would be a real coup for the new owners.

But if Vardy thinks he can still compete at a higher level, then perhaps it may just prove the wrong time to pursue a deal for Sheffield Wednesday.
