Cameron Dawson looks set to leave Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent basis this summer.
That's according to a report from The Sheffield Star, who say that the goalkeeper is expected to have opportunities to move elsewhere at that point.
Having come through the youth ranks with the Owls, Dawson has spent his entire senior career as an Owls player.
He has however, had a number of spells out on loan elsewhere, with the likes of Plymouth Argyle, Alfreton Town, Chesterfield, Wycombe Wanderers and Exeter City.
Now though, it appears that the 28-year-old could be set to leave Sheffield Wednesday for good in the next few weeks.
As things stand, Dawson's contract with the Owls is set to expire in the summer of 2024, meaning he will be able to leave on a free transfer in the coming months.
The club confirmed in their end of season retained list that the goalkeeper has been offered a new deal to extend his stay at Hillsborough.
However, this latest update has now claimed that despite that offer, Dawson is looking as though he will leave Sheffield Wednesday before the start of next season.
The 28-year-old is expected to embark on a new challenge, and apparently already has a number of other potential avenues he could explore.
Since making his senior debut for the Owls in October 2016, Dawson has made 129 appearances in all competitions for the club.
He has though, never featured in more than 26 league games in a single season for Sheffield Wednesday.
If he does leave, then 18-year-old Pierce Charles will be the only professional goalkeeper on the books at Hillsborough as things stand.
However, it has been reported that Wednesday are set to sign another goalkeeper, Ben Hamer, following his release from Championship rivals Watford.
Wednesday are apparently also keen on re-signing Brighton 'keeper James Beadle on another loan deal, after his spell with the club last season.
After completing a great escape under Danny Rohl to secure a 20th place finish in the Championship last season, Sheffield Wednesday are now preparing for another year in the second-tier.
With Dawson seemingly now set to be on the move this summer, he could be a sensible target for a number of clubs in the Football League.
The goalkeeper was of course, part of the Sheffield Wednesday squad that won promotion from League One in 2023.
He also helped Exeter City win promotion from League Two during a loan spell there the season before that.
As a result, his experience of success in the Football League is something that should make him an appealing option for a number of clubs, who will be looking for similar achievements next season.
Given he is available on a free transfer, Dawson is also a good option from a financial perspective, since he may not eat into a club's budget too much.
At 28-years-old, you can also understand why the player himself may be keen to move elsewhere this summer.
He is at the stage of his career where he really should be playing consistently, which he has not really been able to do at Sheffield Wednesday, so a move elsewhere could be best for him.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see where he ends up come the start of next season.
