Huddersfield Town head coach Martin Drury has revealed his stance on striker Joe Taylor's future ahead of next week's transfer deadline.

Huddersfield Town head coach Martin Drury has insisted he is keen to keep striker Joe Taylor at the club beyond the end of the summer transfer window.

Taylor joined Huddersfield from Luton Town for a reported fee of over £3 million in January 2025, but it is fair to say he has had a mixed spell at the Accu Stadium so far.

Having previously had prolific loan spells with Colchester United and Lincoln City, Taylor looked to be an exciting signing for Huddersfield, but he struggled to make an impact after his big-money move, scoring just nine goals in his first year at the club.

After falling out of favour under then manager Lee Grant, Taylor was loaned out to Wigan Athletic in January, and he rediscovered his form during a successful stint in Lancashire, scoring 11 goals in 22 games to help the Latics secure League One survival.

It seems Taylor's exploits at the Brick Community Stadium did not go unnoticed, and after being linked with Ipswich Town and Stoke City towards the end of last season, it was claimed in June that Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers held an interest in the 23-year-old.

However, with a move away from the Accu Stadium yet to materialise, Taylor has been brought back into the fold by new head coach Drury following his return from Wigan, and he has played an important role for the Terriers in the early stages of this season.

Taylor has started both of Town's first two league games, and after providing an assist in the 3-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon, he opened his account for the campaign when he netted in Saturday's 1-1 draw at MK Dons.

As the clock ticks down to Tuesday's 11pm transfer deadline, it remains unclear whether Taylor will be staying at Huddersfield, and Drury admitted he cannot provide any guarantees over the striker's future.

However, Drury made it clear that he hopes Taylor is still at the club after the transfer window slams shut, and he revealed that the Terriers' hierarchy are also keen to retain the Welsh Under-21 international.

"When you have good players, I don't think you can ever sit and say I'm confident that they're not going to go anywhere, particularly in a transfer window," Drury told The Yorkshire Post.

"So I'd been naive to sit here and say I'm confident of it. But my understanding is — and the clarity I have — is that every single person at the club wants Joe Taylor at this club.

"And the people that make decisions from a financial point of view and from a business model point of view all want Joe Taylor at this club.

"So I would say Joe Taylor's going to be with us and I'm excited to work with him and I'm sure that we're going to work together in a way that he's going to score loads of goals for us and be a real positive impact on us."

Drury's refusal to rule out a possible exit for Taylor may cause some unease among Huddersfield supporters ahead of the transfer deadline, and it would be no surprise to see late bids arrive, particularly after his strong start to the season.

However, after a frustrating start to life at the Accu Stadium, it looks as though Taylor is finally starting to find his feet in a Terriers shirt, and given his proven League One goalscoring credentials, it would be a big mistake for the club to cash in on him at this late stage of the window.

If Taylor is sold, Town would still have the likes of Ashley Fletcher and Bojan Radulovic on their books to provide the goals, but Taylor could hold the key to a promotion push this season, and they should resist any approaches they receive over the coming days.
