For the 10th consecutive tournament, the United States have advanced to the Gold Cup semi-finals following Sunday night’s 1-0 victory over minnows Curaçao.
The island nation of well under 200,000 people gave the United States a real scare and were arguably the better side for most of the game.
The United States will now face Jamaica on Wednesday, 3 July.
Curaçao received an enormous boost less than four minutes into the match as goalkeeper Eloy Room produced one of the saves of the tournament.
The two sides would trade chances for the rest of the half but the breakthrough came in the 25th minute.
Christian Pulisic did well to create enough space against Cuco Martina to launch an incredible cross to find Weston McKennie all alone on the far post.
To much surprise, the second half practically belonged to Curaçao. Oldham Athletic winger Gevaro Nepomuceno looked the most dangerous man on the pitch, forcing goalkeeper Zack Steffen to make a series of saves.
Less than 10 minutes from time, Leandro Bacuna came up with Curaçao’s most dangerous opportunity but Steffen came up huge with the best of his five saves on the night to preserve the victory.
Pulisic was one of the only consistent performers on the pitch and his inch-perfect cross to McKennie was absolutely sublime.
