The USA have won their first ever bronze medal in women’s football, overcoming Australia in an incredible 4-3 win on Thursday.
Scorers: Kerr 17′, Foord 54′, Gielnik 90′; Rapinoe 8′, 21′, Lloyd 45+1′, 51′
The USWNT got the better of Australia to win Olympic bronze in a sensational game on Thursday morning.
Australia had started brightly in the match for third place and a bronze medal but were soon behind from an incredible moment in Kashima.
Megan Rapinoe stepped up to take a corner and whipped it directly into the net to give the USWNT the lead. It set the tone for a superb game.
With the USWNT loose in possession at the back and punished by a brilliant ball from Caitlin Foord and a venomous finish from Sam Kerr to equalise but the US lead was soon restored by a brilliant Rapinoe volley.
Carli Lloyd added another in first half injury time, scoring from a tight angle to become the outright second top scorer in USWNT history. And she had one more shortly after the break, finishing cooly after finding herself through one-on-one.
That looked like game over but Australia had other ideas and Caitlin Foord struck minutes later to reduce the lead to 4-2 and keep the game alive.
An Emily Gielnik screamer made it 4-3 in the closing stages but it wasn’t enough for Australia to force extra-time and they go home empty handed.
