A convincing Champions League performance from Arsenal saw them enjoy a 4-0 away win over Juventus, who are still yet to beat an English opponent in the competition. The Gunners secured their victory thanks to goals from Frida Maanum, Stina Blackstenius, Mariona Caldentey, and Caitlin Foord.

Prior to Tuesday’s match, Arsenal earned their first win of the campaign with a 4-1 result over Vålerenga. Juventus however, were hoping to make amends following a 2-0 loss against Bayern Munich.

Arsenal earn statement European win

A spell of early pressure from the hosts led to their first shot on target in only the second minute. A great one-on-one save by Daphne van Domeselaar prevented Sofia Cantore from opening the scoring. Moments later, Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was called into action against her former side after she tipped Katie McCabe’s free-kick over the bar.

Breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute, Maanum slotted home a lovely team goal. A great pass from Foord sliced through the Juventus defence and Maanum was there to finish into the bottom corner.

The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Arsenal dominating both possession and chances. Emily Fox came close to doubling the Gunners’ lead in the 58th minute but her shot ultimately hit the bar.

Stina Blackstenius added Arsenal’s second in the 75th minute following a neat finish at the near post. Three-time Champions League winner Mariona scored the third goal when Estelle Cascarino’s clearance fell straight to the Spaniard.

Then, Foord — Arsenal’s top goalscorer this season — cemented the victory as she swept the ball in from close-range. Arsenal are currently second in Group C with six points, behind leaders Bayern Munich on nine.

What is next for Arsenal and Juventus?

Juventus will try to extend their lead at the top of the Serie A Femminile table when they take on Sassuolo on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will travel to their North London rivals as they prepare to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday with kick-off scheduled for 13:45 GMT. The match will be streamed on BBC One for those in the UK. International viewers can watch via the Barclays WSL YouTube channel.
