“It was a wonderful time,” said Vaclik of his Sevilla years, speaking to AS. The 37-year-old goalkeeper has revisited the highs and lows of his spell in Nervión.
He recalled the 3-0 win over Real Madrid in September 2018 after spending the night in hospital with his wife and young daughter. He thought he would not play, then was cleared, reached the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán in tears and delivered a standout display. “It was a memorable match after a huge scare.”
An injury after the return to competition following the pandemic changed his status, opening the door for Bono under Julen Lopetegui. “Bono had come into the team, he was a top goalkeeper, and he prepared very well for when the chance came.”
Vaclik made 94 competitive appearances for Sevilla between 2018 and 2021, keeping 34 clean sheets, and was part of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League triumph. He departed as a free agent in 2021.
The derbies also loom large in his memory. “Aside from the Europa League we won, the greatest satisfaction was always beating Betis. I did it on three occasions.”
Before Sevilla he played for Viktoria Žižkov, Sparta Prague and Basel, winning the Czech league and cup in 2013-14 and four domestic titles in Switzerland. After leaving he had spells at Olympiacos, Huddersfield Town, New England Revolution, Albacete and Boavista, and he was a Czech Republic regular, named Czech Footballer of the Year in 2018. He continues to work while awaiting a new opportunity.
