Valencia appoint Javier Aguirre as head coach on deal to season’s end | OneFootball

Valencia have appointed Javier Aguirre as head coach until the end of the season, with an option of a further year, the club said in a statement. The veteran Mexican arrives after a dismal start to the domestic campaign.

The 67-year-old returns to Spanish football only months after finishing his stint with Mexico, and is widely known as 'El Vasco'.

Valencia sit next to bottom in La Liga on four points from seven matches. That run prompted the dismissal of Carlos Corberan on 14 September.

Aguirre has previously managed CA Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca, and has also worked in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Mexico.

His highlights in Spain include guiding Osasuna into the UEFA Champions League. In Mexico he won the Liga title with Pachuca in 1999, and the CONCACAF Champions League with CF Monterrey in 2021.

Los Che are reshaping under new sporting director Braulio Vazquez, who was presented earlier this week. Aguirre will be unveiled at Mestalla on Monday, 28 September.
