Valencia are weighing a move in the free-agent market after an unsuccessful summer window closed on 2 September, with any further signings restricted to unattached players.

According to Superdeporte, the sporting department accepts the summer work fell short and will at least study options, although there is no guarantee they will commit to a deal.

If they do add, a centre forward is viewed as the main target for Carlos Corberán’s squad. After Umar Sadiq’s significant injury, expected to sideline him for around two months, the number nine became the priority, yet Gourlay and colleagues failed to land one in the final days. In a late attempt, Valencia moved for Marvin Ducksch, but Birmingham City blocked it on Tuesday due to a lack of room to manoeuvre in the closing hours.

There are several free-agent strikers available, some linked earlier in the summer, but any move hinges on the club’s willingness to fund another wage and its ability to persuade players who may draw rival interest.

Seven players arrived at Mestalla this summer for a total outlay of only nine million euros, ranking 14th among the 20 LaLiga clubs. Harvey Elliot, Pablo Maffeo and Van Oevelen joined on loan, with De Haas and Dieng arriving as free agents. The only transfer fees were paid for Ryunosuke Sato and Arnau Martínez.

Some of those additions could help Corberán, but they do not cover every need in a squad that last season fought simply to avoid relegation.
