Valencia are facing fresh trouble at right-back after Dimitri Foulquier underwent knee surgery. With Thierry Rendall highly doubtful for the Levante derby and Rubo Iranzo also sidelined, Carlos Corberán is short of options.
The club said in a statement that the defender had successful surgery on his left knee on Thursday 12 February in Valencia, performed by orthopaedic surgeon Ignacio Muñoz Criado and supervised by Dr Pedro López. He will remain in hospital for clinical monitoring in the coming hours.
Foulquier will be out for the coming weeks. No firm timeline has been set for his return, and his absence arrives at a delicate point in the season with fixtures stacking up and points at a premium.
Rendall continues to struggle with fitness and is highly unlikely to feature against Levante, and could be out for longer. The injuries also rule out academy defender Rubo Iranzo, increasing the headache for Corberán.
The coaching staff are weighing emergency fixes, from dropping a winger into defence or using a centre-back there to promoting a B-team player. Corberán has used improvised solutions before, but a derby leaves little room for error.
Beyond this week, Valencia’s planning faces scrutiny with the position repeatedly hit by injuries and inconsistency in recent seasons. Mestalla wants answers, and the team need them quickly.
