Valencia’s right-back situation has worsened after Miguel Monferrer sustained a hamstring injury, removing a natural academy solution and reshaping Carlos Corberán’s plans.
According to Superdeporte, injuries to Dimitri Foulquier and Rubén Iranzo, plus Thierry Rendall’s recurring fitness issues, had already left the role exposed. Thierry also left a recent session with discomfort.
Monferrer was not top of the list for the derby, but his name had begun to gather momentum. The confirmed problem rules him out in the short term and delays any first-team chance.
Corberán has weighed using the B team but has been reluctant over the past year. The alternative now points to a first-teamer covering the flank, even a conversion for Unai Núñez or another squad player.
Monferrer’s profile explains the consideration. A defensively minded right-back, rugged and intense, he reads the game well and rarely loses position.
In Óscar Sánchez’s Juvenil A he provided balance, often tucking inside to create overloads and free David Otorbi for depth on the far side. He is not expansive in attack, but joins sensibly and prioritises the collective.
His rise has been steady. A former youth captain, he became a regular under Miguel Ángel Angulo, playing 19 matches this season and more than 75% of available minutes until injured.
That consistency made him the B team’s first specific option at right-back once Iranzo was sidelined. The current climate is not ideal for debuts, and the hamstring setback pushes any promotion back, though not necessarily for the medium term.
