Valencia sought a young right back last summer, mindful of Thierry and Foulquier’s fitness issues, and Álex Lizancos was a leading option. He now crosses paths with them earlier than his camp might have envisaged, with Burgos set to face Valencia on Thursday.

According to Superdeporte, Valencia negotiated with Lugo for Lizancos, seeing him as a necessary addition who could begin with the B team. The view then was that the fee would be modest and the step up could come quickly.

Having never played in Segunda, Lizancos swiftly earned a starting role. He debuted in a 5-1 win over Cultural Leonesa, impressed late on at Deportivo de la Coruña in Riazor, missed the matchday three meeting with Andorra, a defeat, and has started ever since. His first start brought a clean sheet against Las Palmas and his all-round game has surged, mixing attacking thrust with stronger defensive work and bite in duels.

The 22-year-old has become one of the standouts in the division. On La Pizarra de Quintana on Radio Marca, Borja Aranda and Javier Mateos named him the best right back in Segunda, with the caveat that teams could not be repeated.

Valencia’s right flank has again proved problematic. Thierry is injured after going off against Elche and Foulquier’s level has fallen short so far, and had Lizancos joined the B team he might already have debuted at Mestalla.

Whether he features on Thursday depends on his coach’s call. He did not play in Burgos’s last two cup ties against Zaragoza and Getafe, as he is a regular in the league.
