Valente strike gives Feyenoord opening-day win at Het Kasteel

Feyenoord started their Eredivisie season with a 1-0 win at Sparta Rotterdam at Het Kasteel, Luciano Valente deciding it in the 35th minute to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side three points.

Valente swept in from the centre after Gjivai Zechiël's pass (35.).

Filip Bednarek kept Sparta Rotterdam in the game with six saves. Feyenoord registered 22 attempts and 59.6% possession. Sparta Rotterdam had 10 attempts but failed to hit the target.

After the restart, Sparta Rotterdam introduced Alwande Roaldsøy and Milan Zonneveld (62.), then Mitchell Van Bergen (77.). Feyenoord freshened up with Nacho Ferri (71.) and Tijme Wessels (72.).

Seven minutes were added in the second half, and Zonneveld headed over in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Tjark Ernst was rarely troubled, making one save.
