Ernesto Valverde and Iñigo Lekue were honoured by the Herri Harmaila at San Mamés after Athletic’s 1-1 draw with Celta, Valverde’s final game at La Catedral. According to El Correo, the tribute drew the current squad, José Ángel Iribar and numerous former players. The send-off split opinion, whistles and applause heard around the ground.

After the final whistle, all players remained on the pitch as injured teammates joined to share a last chant with the singing end.

Valverde and Lekue moved towards the stand to accept their tribute as a huge banner was unfurled. They then climbed into the section and appeared to speak on the microphone, although much of it was barely audible over the PA.

Lekue received a framed retro shirt and looked deeply moved. Valverde was handed a small picture of him posing with the Copa del Rey.

The ceremony ended with Txoria Txori ringing out, with Lekue still up in the stand. Separately, Yuri appeared to bid farewell to the crowd, hand to heart and embracing teammates.
