Valverde ‘says no’ to Valencia as Braulio looks elsewhere | OneFootball

Ernesto Valverde has rejected Valencia’s approach for the head coach role as new sporting chief Braulio Vázquez widens his search, according to COPE Valencia.

Vázquez left Osasuna on Sunday to join Valencia, then moved quickly to draw up candidates to replace Carlos Corberán. Top of the list was Valverde, who departed Athletic this summer and previously worked with Vázquez at Valencia in 2012 after he was chosen to replace Mauricio Pellegrino.

Valencia are bottom of the top flight and again in deep crisis. Valverde, who delivered the Copa del Rey to Athletic 40 years after their previous triumph, prefers to stay away from the dugout after four demanding seasons and a complicated final campaign.

It appears he has also turned down other significant European projects, opting to remain out of work for now.

Vázquez, father of footballer Jesús Vázquez, now has Jagoba Arrasate in mind, the Biscayan coach dismissed by Mallorca last season. The pair have a close relationship, with Vázquez having previously appointed him at Osasuna.

Other names under consideration include Javier Aguirre and José Luis Mendilibar, recently sacked by Olympiacos. Talk has also turned to Rafa Benítez and even Marcelino, though those feel rooted more in nostalgia than Valencia’s current reality.
